About Mercy Hospice

Hospice is a comprehensive range of health and comfort care services for people with life-limiting illnesses. In most cases, these people have refused, or are otherwise ineligible for curative measures such as surgeries or advanced medical treatments.

However, all hospices are not the same. In fact, though there are a number of other hospice providers in the area, Mercy is the oldest, and is still the only non-profit hospice physically located in Horry County. For three decades, they have been there to help people when they have needed it most, regardless of their ability to pay. Mercy also has experts no other hospice has, Dr. Charles Sasser, the medical director, is the only certified hospice and palliative care physician in Horry County.

Dr. Sasser and Sara-Jo Faucher, the Executive Director, have instituted a team approach to caring for patients aimed at healing the heart, comforting the body and soothing the spirit. Every Mercy patient has a cadre of caring, competent professionals that can be called upon any time help is needed. The team is comprised of a physician, skilled nurse, certified nursing assistant, social worker, chaplain and volunteer. The physician and nurse manage the patient’s pain and symptoms, while the CNA assists with bathing, grooming, light housekeeping and other needs. The social worker helps the patient and family sort through emotional issues and challenges, while the non-denominational chaplain offers spiritual support. Last, but certainly not least, a trained volunteer is available to be with the patient and family and lend a hand with meals, provide company, listen or sit quietly.
